I work under this bridge. A couple of hours ago, something (apparently, a sheetmetal screw) fell or was dropped from the bridge and landed on my car's rear window. It shattered. My deductible is $500, and my company has no plans to help me pay for it. This will eat up my tax refund and then some. I am fine, but I'm disappointed that money will be tighter than expected, especially during this time of moving and change. I'm filing a claim with CalTrans, but they're notoriously unhelpful, so I'm pretty sure I'm just eating the $500.

I want for this not to affect my move or my trip to apc11, but it may, and I'm feeling prepared to deal with everything as it comes. Accidents happen, and it's only money. I'll be happy when this work day is over, though. The mobile glass company is coming to fix the window this afternoon, and then I'm just going to go enjoy my three-day weekend.

Oh, and today is an official ChurchLite holiday. Happy Founding Day, everyone. :-)

Ouch. Rotten luck, that.

Yep, but relatively small in the scheme of things.

So, when am I gonna get to see you? My current plan is for March 31 to be our last day in SoCal. Can I cook for you? I promise not to make brown rice. ;-)

Sometime soon, I hope. I'm finally over being sick...or so it seems...taking it easy until Monday in hopes of fending off relapse.

I'll try anything you make, so long as it doesn't have bell peppers, or feature mangoes or papayas prominently (green ones are okay.)

Hmmm, lemme think. Coconut shrimp? Tofu curry? Pasta? Those are my tried-and-true specialties. :-)

Oh, I wasn't requesting that you pick; just daydreaming. Here's hoping for no relapse.

Eeek. I take it you wouldn't consider suing?

I'm sorry, serene, and look at you for being so ... serene ... about it.

I did consider suing, but they company does post "park at your own risk" signs all over the lot, and they make you sign a non-liability thing at the start, if I remember correctly, so I think this is a case of doing my best to see if CalTrans will take responsibility. It's possible it was just a pebble, which really wouldn't be anyone's fault, so it would seem unethical of me to press it beyond filing the standard claim form.

And thanks. Maybe I'll be upset about it later, and I definitely would've been upset if I had had to borrow the money, but right now it seems minor (especially after cow-orkers spent a half hour talking about all the *people* who've come off that bridge in the last several years).

You might want to check with your insurance if you haven't already. Mine has a seperate deductible for glass that is less. When I had my windshield replaced last year, it only cost me $100. Because it is your rear window it might not apply, but it can't hurt to check.

She asked me which window it was; maybe that's why. Thanks.

Aye, around here, for windows which shatter due to stray gunshot, vandalism, or something like that, our insurance charges no deductible. Maybe it's a state thing, though. Perhaps people are more likely to have windows shot out while driving along Virginia backroads. ;)

Ack and fooey!

May the rest of the day go better. And may whatever powers-that-be govern these things decide to cut you some financial slack.

Arrrgh! What a total pain! As I usually say about dental stuff, I'm sure you could think of an infinite number of better ways to blow $500. At least you won't be working under that bridge for much longer, pretty though it looks in the picture.

You know, you made me realize that working in this lovely environment for two years and change, literally at the water's edge, has been worth the $500. Thanks!

If you can find the thing that broke your window, then I'd definately contact Caltrans (who I assume is the agency responsible for maintaining the bridge).

If it fell out of the structure of the bridge, they'd be interested in knowing about it, and they'd definately be liable for the damage caused to your car.

If you can't find the thing that broke your window, then it could be the fault of someone driving by overhead, and you'll never find them.

That sucks, but at least if you're going to have car problems they should happen while you're away from the car.

Kelly recently had her windshield replaced (it probably cracked from pebbles flying around on the highway). We picked up her car at the repair shop last Friday, and then we were driving around on Saturday morning and we saw a crack in the new windshield. She called them back and they fixed it up without billing her insurance a second time. I was pretty appalled, but apparently these things happen, so keep an eye on the new windshield for a few days after it gets installed to make sure they didn't screw up.

Thanks for the tip, and yeah, I'm really grateful no one was hurt. Things (and folks) larger than a sheetmetal screw come off that bridge all the time.
