There was a lovely essay on "As Far As We Know" (I think it's called) on NPR tonight about a bookmaker (not a bookie -- a person who makes books) and the way he and the narrator spoke about the sensuality of paper and ink and type, it made me just want to go touch a well-made book. I am a bit strange.

Had lovely weekend. [livejournal.com profile] treacle_well flew in from Boston to go to [livejournal.com profile] brian1789's birthday party, and he was properly floored that she did. She stayed with us, and is a delightful houseguest. The party was very nice, with plenty of people-watching opportunities, a chance to see some good friends and meet new people, and perfect, perfect weather. Also, every local event I go to, I get to put a face to at least one new net.pal, and Saturday was no exception. Had a really fun conversation with [livejournal.com profile] treacle_well, [livejournal.com profile] mactavish, and [livejournal.com profile] tenacious_snail about everything from boysex to -- well, mostly about boysex, now that I think of it. ;-)

Today was good, too. Walked [livejournal.com profile] treacle_well to the BART and walked around the flea market a little, then went over to [livejournal.com profile] stonebender's place, where I promptly fell asleep on him. Oy. Anyway, sleep happened for a little bit, and nookie happened, and food happened, and a bit of DVD-watching happened. Oh, and tons of good talking out under the patio umbrella, eating a fresh tomato from his partner's garden. Life is really fucking good.

[livejournal.com profile] someotherguy is at a sleep study tonight, so I'm alone in the house, which other than missing my sweetie, is something I mostly like, especially since there are people living upstairs, so I generally don't feel alone and scared here. I may just sit in front of the computer today, or I may get up at some point and do dishes and play country music and eat junk food. Or not. We'll see. Might just finish my serial-killer novel and go to bed. Gotta pick up [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy at 6am tomorrow and then go to work, so getting to bed early would be a good idea.

[livejournal.com profile] sogwife is still sewing on the garb for [livejournal.com profile] mysticallady and [livejournal.com profile] greywolf_'s wedding. We leave late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. It's costing us a lot of time and money to do this, but we love them and want their wedding to be perfect, so off we go.

I think I'm gonna like "Firefly".

Tired. Gonna read email and LJ for a while, then toddle off to bed and think of the beauty of paper and ink and life. It's a good day, and I hope yours is, as well.

Saw about half an episode, and I liked it. The writing is good, and the campiness of the spaghetti-western feel it has was just over-the-top enough for me to like it.

"Firefly" makes me very happy I have a DVD player; I love listening to the commentaries.

But first watch it end-to-end and then go back for the commentaries.

Oh, it's a TV series! I was puzzled, because I had an immediate association with the name that I couldn't place, until I remembered that it's the label of the Australian Syrah we drank with dinner the other night.

Come to think of it, you might enjoy that, too, if you like red wine.

I'll have to look up the article on bookmaking. It sounds yummy and well made books are one of my favorite things. I have some antiques I picked up not only because they were classic poets, but because the books are made so exquisitely.

The program serene was listening to is called "To the Best of Our Knowledge". I heard the same one as I was snapping beans for my dinner.

website: (sorry, not making this into a tag) http://wpr.org/book/index.html

There are art printers in Berkeley - one does a lot of work for Black Oak Books.

(I used to be a calligrapher and student of illuminated manuscripts - still love typefaces and beautiful books.)
