So, now that everyone has talked about their part of the suckage, I can say more about it. You are NOT being a bad friend if you don't feel up to clicking on the link and reading the litany:
Suckage #1 is that a dear family member, the inimitable
dbubley, has cancer again, and it unfortunately is too deep in her skull for them to be sure it will be operable. The head & neck guy has declined to operate, but next stop is the neurosurgeon, if I'm understanding things correctly.
loracs and
stonebender are even more shellshocked by this than I am, of course, and I sit here feeling helpless and frustrated, so just imagine how they feel. We will pull together as a family full of strong, loving, powerful people, and we'll do our best, but holy jeebus, what a fucking gauntlet this family has been through this past couple of years.
Suckage #2: My mother is sick again, with some kind of infection, and it's resisting treatment so far. Not fun for anyone.
Suckage #3: Job uncertainty for
someotherguy
Those are the main ones, but little stuff also piles up, in the way it will, until our whole family consists of people who just want to curl up into a fetal position and let the world go by.
And of course, there is still joy and beauty, because joy and beauty are as tenacious as fear and sorrow. My new piano is a blissful addition to my home; my kid is going to take a college-level art class next month; the second issue of the magazine is really going to happen, after I had really feared it might not; my family just fairly bursts with love and regard for each other; and you, my friends, are here when I need you. I hope I can be there for you when you need me, too.
