Catching up
Oct. 13th, 2004 07:58 pmSome notes from the last week or two:
1) Sunrises in my new town are much more beautiful than they were in San Diego. Now, *sunsets* in San Diego are beyond gorgeous, but where I lived, the mountains obscured the sunrise. Lately, though, I've been seeing some beauties on the way to work.
2) We drove up to Rio Nido (a tiny collection of cabins in the redwoods on the Russian River) to be with
sogwife's mother while she died. I'm glad we were able to be there for that; it happened a little over an hour after we arrived. That night, we waited for the morticians, and then slept on an air mattress (once
someotherguy figured out what was wrong with the pump) at the Rio Nido house before heading out Thursday morning to begin work on cleaning out the Healdsburg place. (They found out before she died that they needed to move from the place in Healdsburg that they've been renting since
sogwife was a little girl, but who can deal with clearing out years' worth of stuff when a loved one is dying?)
It was hard work. We found some fascinating things, and we surprised ourselves by kinda enjoying the time together doing the hard work. We laughed a lot, and I don't know about the others, but I felt so much closer and more wedded to them when it was over. At one point, I stopped and laughed, and they asked me what was up. "I'm sitting here, up to my elbows in junk, cleaning out the home of my partners' dead mother; this must be the glamorous Poly Lifestyle I keep hearing about!"
sogwife has been amazing through all this. It can't possibly be easy for her, but she's handled it with grace and humor. Love you, girlness.
3. The contract at work ends at the end of November. One of my bosses has arranged to hire me for a part time job with benefits (the shit job I try to give away here from time to time), and I'm really thrilled. I will be working two days a week, getting enough money to scrape by, and getting *benefits*! Goodbye to spending $340 a month on COBRA, yay!
4. Munchkin the Elder is having a hard time at home. Zie wants to move in with me. I'm driving down for a visit in a week and a half, and we're gonna discuss it. Oy.
5. We got a dining table! I can't tell you how happy this makes me. I have hated eating on our laps or on tv trays.
stonebender is gonna get me some paint to refurbish it, but it's a great, sturdy table, and I adore it, even if it was free on freecycle. :-)
6. I made the Andersen's Split Pea Soup recipe that I bought from the restaurant when we went. It turned out really well, and if anyone wants the recipe, lemme know and I'll email it to you.
7. During all this upheaval, I have been bad about keeping in touch with folks. Add in that the desktop I was using, which contained all my saved email, bit the dust last week, and you get a plea from me: If I owe you email and you wish you would hear from me, take pity on me, please, and send me email at serene@serenepages.org. Thank you.
Life is hard; life is good. I can live with that.

And yay for a new table. I remember finally getting a table at my old apartment. People who say money can't buy happiness have never eaten off their damn laps for half a year.

Date: 2004-10-13 09:36 pm (UTC)Oh, sweetie, that pretty much sums it up. But isn't it just *great* to breathe in and out? :*-) There are days when it just gets so hard that all I want to do at the end of those days is gather the precious people around me and celebrate the fact we're all still breathing and hoping and working and loving.
*hugs* for what you've all been going through. Hope to give you real ones very soon.
