I read it too. It's amusing, and the author makes some good points. But I'm a professional writer with a number of published books to my credit, and I love doing NaNo. Trust me, grad school is *worse*. If getting an MA in Creative Writing couldn't discourage me, nothing can.
If it weren't for NaNo, I wouldn't know you or anybody else here. (Well, except for the members of my quad who post here.) A NaNoWriter gave me my code two years ago, and I got started in the community by reading his friends list.
I'm not opposed to NaNo, nor do I think people who do it are foolish. That said, it made me not want to write for MONTHS last time I did it, and the novel I started sits unfinished, so for me, that part rang true. Basically, though, the rest of the thing has some really good advice, I think. (Speaking as a published writer and non-novelist.)
*chortle*. funny satirical essay. not that i needed any validation for not participating in nanowrimo -- i don't write that way, and i don't need that sort of encouragement to write.
more power to whoever is encouraged to write by nanowrimo, though! whatever encourages people to express themselves creatively is a good thing by me. as long as people don't get trapped by the, well, trappings. :)
