Dec. 25th, 2004 07:24 pm5. Is there a character in literature that feels a bit like you, at the core? Who is it, and what makes this character your mirror in some way?
Arthur Dent. He's basically good at heart, a bit bewildered, and braver than he thinks he is.
Idgie Threadgood. She's not exactly fearless, but she does things she's afraid of. She's loyal, but she won't be mistreated. She's queer as fuck, and she makes her own rules. She cares more about what people think than her lifestyle might suggest, but less than some people around her wish she did. She knows that comfort pales in importance to love and integrity. She would die for the ones she loves, but won't pander to people just because they're family or authority. She is sometimes lonely because she doesn't let people really close easily.
6. What's the last book you can remember reading and thinking "Wow, that was a really *good* book"?
American Gods
7. Do number 6 with a film.
"Osama" (There may be something more recent, but I'm not remembering what it may be.)
8. Do you have a desert-island novel/film? (Or a group of them?) (Translation: If you only had one (or three, or five) books/films you could take with you onto a desert island, what would they be?) No fair picking non-fiction reference books -- assume you'll have plenty of access to hut-building manuals and a field guide to edible bugs.
I would take Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and "Bull Durham"
9. Is there a genre you gravitate toward? One you tend to avoid? What are they?
I love literary fiction, including short stories. I like lots of old science fiction (I grew up on Asimov and Bradbury, and I still love that stuff). I also love mysteries and poetry. I don't like most fantasy I've read, or most cyberpunk.
