Lord help me, I'm shining my sink.

Some of you know why I would do such a thing. Don't hate me.

I've gone over to the dark side again, but damn, is my kitchen all gleamy.

This continues to cross my info radar from vastly different segments of my life. Maybe one day I'll go over to the dark side myself.

Thanks for reminding me of it; moving into a new place is a perfect opportunity to twist it to my evil ends use it as a basis for creating a new cleaning routine.

I really think the flylady routine is great. It's just very difficult for ummm, I guess women steeped in feminist disourse[1] to see past the extreme 'homemaker' coating.

[1]And I'm including me in this.

It's not the homemaker coating that bothers me. I am a homemaker. It's the PINK HOUSECOAT WITH ANGEL WINGS AND LIL FLUFFY BUNNIES LOL OMG that makes it hard to swallow. Because I have a spine and a sense of the ridiculous.

But it *works* dammit. The whole system works.

*nod* And despite it working I see loads of women in my circles apologising for using it rather than just saying 'It works and I don't care if the wrapping is bubblegum.' And I find this fascinating.

(side note: I used homemaker above because it's a phrase I dislike. It smacks too much of defensiveness and having to justify not being part of the liberal capitalist system. If you have a different take I'd love to hear it.)

I'm not really apologizing for doing the flylady thing, or for reading Home Comforts for pleasure. I keep house. I like it. It makes me happy. I love getting my partners a cup of coffee and a hot dinner.

That said, I joke about it because for a long time I thought I was selling out my sisters for liking it, for having wishes to be home caring for my home and family. Now I don't care. I like it. It's who I am, who I've always been. I think the FlyLady is hilariously over the top, but it's fun for me, and if I were really embarrassed about it, I wouldn't have posted it to my LJ. :-)

Well, home-making is part of what I do. I'm not a housewife, because I'm not married to the house; I do husbandry, but I'm not male. Home-maker accurately describes part of what I do - I put a great deal of effort into making our house a home where we can live our lives, a place we like to be to live and work and eat and play.

I don't use it much as a word because, like stay-at-home-mother, people respond with "Oh so you don't really work" which is bullshit. But, like stay-at-home-mother, it's part of what I do.

I've also gone over to the dark side again, and it is working, damnit!

[livejournal.com profile] hippybngstockng and I have both been known to snark over the LOL OMG! DD/DH/DS thing, and the bubblegum wrapping, but the system works, and that's really what matters.

I set up a decluttering-tidying routine based on flylady (but without the shiny sink - cleaning my sink is something I do often enough already and I don't need a routine to remind me to do it), and I'm still trying to do the routine sometimes, but over time I get more and more slack about it.

I don't think it's the dark side if you use it as a tool for setting up your own system. I don't see how anyone could use it exactly as is, but I'm housekeeping-impaired.

Jason did that once, down to oiling the sink. He seemed to enjoy it, while noting the weirdness of it all (if she's not addressing feminists, she's very much not addressing men, I gather).

I heard of the Flylady through an NPR program, and did the sink shining for months before I knew she had a book or a web site.

I have never been on the mailing list, and I mostly show up on the site to check zones. I do feel obliged to warn my sophisticated friends about the sugar wrapper on the website, but tell them the system works and they should take what is good and not get distracted by the wrapper. Those who have been to my house before and after know it does work.

Anyway, the quilting newsgroup was worse when I was on it ;).

Charlotte (very pleased to be a flybaby again ... on to the next layer!)
