Today I made split-pea soup in my pressure-cooker. My mom always used a hamhock, but I used a smoked turkey leg. This stuff is really good (though I would probably like it better without the meat, but maybe not).

People who contend that It's Only Good With Meat are mislead.

It's really good without any meat at all.

Mmmmmm, split pea souuuup.

Oh, I love it without the meat, but then it's not like my mom's, and "like my mom's" was what I was going for. :-)

Mmmmmmm. When I make it meatless I increase the aromatics.

Would adding a touch of Liquid Smoke make a meatless version taste more like your mom's ?

That's a good idea. I came close with Bacos when I was a vegan. Oddly, part of me wants it like my mom's, and part of me goes, "This is good, but would be better if it weren't smokey." (I don't, in general, like anything with a smokey flavor.) And I was pretty sure my partners would groove on this. [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy likes it. I actually saw the turkey leg in the meat case at Berkeley Bowl and that gave me the idea to do this. We don't do much red meat around here, and I thought James would appreciate some "ham" that wouldn't give him a coronary. ;-)

And speaking of red meat on the menu, if a person were to drop by tonight, they would probably be served an Ikea meatball meal, complete with cream gravy, red potatoes, and lingonberries. I know; I'm weird. I just went a little nuts in the Swede Shop the other day.
