Okay, so I tried blogger, thinking it might be a better choice for putting
my food blog up on my own
domain than LJ. I think I was wrong. I hate the comment interface, I
don't like blogger in general, etc.

I know an LJ can be set up on one's own domain. I did it successfully with
this LJ for a while. But what I'm wondering is if moving over to LJ on
reluctantvegan.com will make me lose my old blog. Anyone know how this
works? Maybe I could just post pointers to the old posts, which I know
are all archived on my domain. Ideas?

I found it easy. Get a paid account, tell LJ what FQDN you're going to point at them and set up the DNS entry for that FQDN to point at LJ's IP address (which I believe has changed very recently or is just about to change) and voila. Try http://lj.scifi.geek.nz for my journal

But I mean, what happens to the blog that's there already?

If you have another website at that address the entire site would be replaced by your entire LJ. The FQDN just points at one or the other.

So I guess it would be hidden by your LJ.

The content won't be lost, but any pointers to reluctantvegan.com will be broken. It's likely that when you move the domain, the site will still be accessable through blogger, just with a different URL.

http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=129 explains how to move your domain to LiveJournal.

Thanks! I'll have to think about this. Either that, or I'll have to go to the blogger site and figure out ways to make it do what I want it to.
