Oh, wait, atheists aren't saints. Anyway, he's very sweet for agreeing to watch a movie with me. Then when I fell asleep and wanted him to keep watching it even though I was dozing on and off throughout the film, because it felt comforting to have his head resting on my legs, he watched the rest of the movie while lying on an unconscious person.

The movie? Shark Tale.

See? A saint.

With enough ordained ministers in the Universal Life Church, which really doesn't care what you believe, sainthood could be arranged for any atheist you want.

This poses an interesting theological question. While some Christian sects teach that salvation is by faith alone, others assume a combination of faith and good works. So a faithful atheist (as opposed to an agnostic, who's more of a doubtful theist) who does good works might possibly qualify for sainthood. The final determination, of course, would be up to a diety the atheist had not any belief in. But I can respect a diety who would grant sainthood to somebody who had the courage of his convictions AND who did good works anyway, just because they were good works.

I'm imagining a conversation in the Great Beyond...

God: Welcome to eternal life, Saint Atheisticus
SA: Who the hell are you? And where am I?
God: You are in heaven, and I am God
SA: Bullshit
God: I knew you were going to say that. *smiling* Would you be willing to stay for lunch? We have a lot to talk about...
