I don't want a killfile for LJ, as some people have wished for. What I want is a magical tool that will make me unable to see posts/comments that meet any of the following criteria:

1) diet talk
2) "it's not a diet, it's a new way of eating" talk
3) off-topic community posts (no matter which community)
4) "I'm not dieting, I'm just watching what I eat" talk
5) posts in which the poster assigns some negative moral value to wanting to eat any particular item of food
6) Long rants/long surveys/elaborate dreams/other longass shit that's not cut-tagged
7) Did I mention diet talk?

If you post any of this stuff, I'm not saying you shouldn't, or that you should care that I don't want to read it. I just wish I had a magic wand that would make it not show up on my screen.

If you get such a tool, I want a copy.

I've just made a mental note to cut-tag any such posts in the future.

It's called a filter. Unfortunately, it also filters out folks' interesting posts.

I know the feeling. :(

I'd also like something that makes it so certain friends of mine who post celebrity news on a constant basis would just STOP.

What about cat diet talk?

Personally, I'm already on a strict cat free diet. :)

I want a tool that enables me to cut-tag other people's posts - just click, and the whole posting goes behind the first 5 words. That would really help with most of these problems.

That would be great.

I think I've seen a Greasemonkey script to do something like that, if you use Firefox.

Wait - I use Firefox!

Are you sure this works on other people's postings??

On your friends page, at any rate, yep. I'll see if I can find it.

Ah, that was easy (it was in the first place I looked, and not buried as I feared):
http://community.livejournal.com/lj_nifty/139050.html

I haven't used it at all, but it sounds like the sort of thing you want, and could probably be tweaked if it's only close.

It sounds exactly like what I want, and I've installed it and ... it doesn't work for my journal layout. Sob! Apparently, people have been lobbying LJ to implement this kind of functionality for 2+ years...

My most recent posts have probably fallen into some of the above categories. (I'm fighting temptation to explain why I don't think of them that way, since that would probably then fall under number four above, and anyway, this is about whether you want to read them, not about why I write them.) Will try to remember to cut-tag henceforth.

I really truly am not suggesting anyone should do *anything* to accommodate my pie-in-the-sky wish. I just wish I had magical powers, is all. Is that so much to ask? ;-)

I wish it weren't so much to ask. A personally tunable one, so each of us could pick out the things that we don't want to see or hear.

I knew it wasn't a suggestion (you're somebody I think I can trust to say what you mean, so I figure if you're suggesting, I'll know it), but if it happens that I can make your reading experience more pleasant, can you blame me for wanting to do so? :-)

I'm not dieting - I'm eating what I want!

Have I mentioned lately that I just adore you?

I just realized that the difference between the magic wand you want, and a killfile, is that yours is in fact magic, aka AI-complete.
