Got a new contract gig for the next some-many weeks that will pay half the bills. Now to find stuff to pay the other half (either a part-time job with benefits, a full-time job with benefits, or enough contract work that I can stay home for the time being while I find some way of getting health benefits that I can afford).
My dream is to work at home full-time, and I think if I bust my butt marketing myself, I can do it, because I'm good, and fast, and relatively cheap, so my clients come back and tell me I'm worth more than I'm charging (yes, I've started charging more).
In the two weeks since I've been unemployed (at least in the conventional sense -- I've done some contract work) I've dealt with a week of family illness, and gotten my house in order (it's clean enough that I'm really happy and am still able to keep up with it). I've applied for unemployment, but I'd rather not rely on that. Next steps I want to take:
1) Fix up my serenepages.com website to make it a professional site. I think SerenePages is a good name for an editorial and document-preparation service, and a good fit for me, so I don't think I'll get a new domain, just spiff up this one.
2) Set up a routine at home for actively seeking more of this kind of work. I'm good at it, I like it, and it means I can spend my days in my home where I'm happy, comfortable, and peaceful. The most stressful part of the working-at-home thing is the marketing of my services, but I think I'm getting better at that, too, so I think I can do this.
3) Gather all the stuff we've been collecting to eBay and do that thing. It won't bring in a lot of money, but some, and it will clear up a bookcase I want for other purposes.
