Not only didn't I get the job, but I saw all four members of the hiring committee today, two of whom are my friends, and none of them told me I hadn't gotten the job. Instead, I found out when I got home, via email.

*sigh* They're under no obligation to tell me to my face, but this is just another reason I want to crawl in a hole in a people-free environment for a while.

I'm sorry you didn't get it :(

as for your friends, I know giving bad news in person sucks, but still...

*hugs*

Oh, come ON. No, there's no obligation, and I understand the desire to avoid that conversation (BT, no DT), but something you just gotta do the Right Thing[TM].

<Hugs> if you want them.

I do want hugs. When can you be here? I'll make toffee.

I'm sending all the hugs I can.

As for the toffee - man, you're such a temptress, and my travel schedule is just full full full. I so need a trip to the Bay Area.

*hugs you*

That indeed sucks. It's uncomfortable to have to tell a friend bad news, but decency should win out over discomfort.

Foolish committee! They clearly don't deserve your super skills.

What he said. I understand all that stuff about separation of work and social life but in this case there's nothing stopping someone having a quiet word and the alternative (an email) is much worse.

I hope you find something that suits you soon.

I might be in nasty mood here, but really - if you're old enough serve in a hiring committee, you're old enough to say "I'm sorry, but you didn't get the job".

From: [identity profile] saluqi.livejournal.com
I don't think it's nasty at all, I agree with you.

With the work/private split I was getting at the whole business of not telling someone they didn't get the job in a situation that isn't private, ie, if there are people there other than those directly involved in the hire because it's a social or other event, not a hire related event. As I mentioned, there is nothing precluding someone from taking a person aside and having a quiet word.

Sure - some things need to be said under four eyes. Some things need to be said gently. But they need to be said.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks the members of the hiring committee may have been forbidden to give you the news, but had to leave it up to HR to do it in an official way. It still sucks, though. Sorry you didn't get the job.

I was thinking the same thing, actually -- it could be against some policy to tell the candidate outside official channels.

That's sucky that you didn't get the job. Definitely their loss.
I'd like to crawl in your people-free hole for a while too, but then if I showed up it wouldn't be people free, huh? Okay, I'll go find my own hole (and you can take that anyway you want) hee hee!

I've applied for other jobs in the same department, and every time I didn't get one, someone pulled me aside and privately let me know I didn't make it. It felt like a caring thing to do, rules or no rules.

That means I should get your number at some point. Mine is here.

I was thinking that, myself, but couldn't figure out how to phrase it. I see, however, that Serene says that's not the case. Which is a pity, because it means people behaved in a hurtful way.

That just sucked. That was one of the things I didn't like about the whole temp thing was driving home after working a full day and getting a call on the way home saying that I was no longer needed. I never could figure out why they couldn't tell me before I left. Good thing I never left anything.
Wanting to hold up in a hole I understand. After I worked with the public for so many years I am sooo glad now I am not having to deal with energy sucking customers anymore! Hope you are revived soon. It was there loss for sure!
