Today's [livejournal.com profile] incendiaryfood log:

2 slices of toast with vegan "butter"
1 glass orange juice

bowl of "rice salad" which is just my way of saying cold rice with mayo on it

half of a "mixed combo" at the Hawaiian barbecue place, and a few sips of iced tea

craft-night food: no-knead bread, butter, chili (vegetarian), pistachios, rice crackers, diluted OJ, devilled eggs, and kettle corn

Turkey lunchmeat sandwich (mayo, white bread)

Vegan butter? I've had apple butter and peanut butter. I imagine vegan butter must be more like a pate, right?

Hmmm. I'm just wondering where they get the vegans.

1) Mmmmm, vegan paste!

2) You've got a .sig on your LJ comments, complete with link to your other blog? How very odd.

why is that odd? i mean it's the first time i've seen it (in fact it's the first time i've seen a .sig on LJ and i am not sure i want to see it a lot more often), but how is it more odd than putting, say, one's LJ into one's .sig in a usenet post?

The best I can do on this is a bad metaphor: Usenet is the public square; My LJ is my living room.

At my housewarming, I stopped a guest from handing out flyers for something he was promoting. I wouldn't do that at a public poly meetup, f'rinstance.

Was that person DC of the wine hot tubs? Because Francesca had to stop him at her house.
I fear your rice salad. But I fear rice pudding, too.

No, it was a guy called Bug or something like that.

a) I'm odd. Film at eleven.

b) Adding a sig everywhere is becoming so ingrained with me that I often am not aware of it.

c) It's a good metaphor. I don't agree with it, myself, but I kind of like it.

That reminds me - I've been noticing that a lot of journals have gone "Friends only" in the last couple of months. I guess I see that as being more living room than an open journal.

a) Heh.

b) But in this case, you had to write the link tag, so I assumed you did it intentionally.

c) The other thing about .sigs on LJ is that they're not necessary in the way they are on Usenet, because all someone has to do to see any links you want to show them is to click on your userinfo icon, as [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy has pointed out.

"Friends only" makes no sense to me in the context of LJ, but that's because part of the reason I'm here is to find interesting folks I haven't already found elsewhere.

I hadn't really thought much about the general LJ ccommunity, so I've been poking around a lot in the last couple of weeks. Now, maybe it's the areas I've been looking through - mostly sexuaality related - that creates an environment in which this happens.

I've seen a few journals that explain on the front page or in the profile that it's an FO journal. Some give little hints, for example they've had a barrage of negative comments, stalking, etc.

I've also just discovered that the overwhelming percentage of users are late teens to early twenties in age. So maybe that's another factor - are young users more prone to disagreements and such?

But yes, the idea of hunting around interests, etc., and discovering a new journal is the attractive part of this. A little friendlier than Usenet at times.

would you stop somebody from inviting some of your guests to a party of their own at another time though? would you think that rude (i don't mean, invite them to leave right then, but at another time)? because that seems to me more equivalent to this instance than an actual promotion for something unrelated.

No, I wouldn't stop them if it came up in conversation. I might stop them if they were going around from table to table, telling everyone about it, and stopping people on their way in the door. I think it's a matter of degrees.

By the way, Tom, I don't think you've done anything wrong. I just hadn't seen an LJ .sig before and found it odd enough to remark on.
