I keep forgetting to post the email I got recently. The "Chris" she mentions is Christopher, the owner of the Cafe at which I used to run the spoken-word night:

Hey Serene!

My name is Rachelle and Chris from Nomad Cafe gave me your contact information. 'm one of the casting producers for ABC TV's Wife Swap, a prime time family reality TV show and I am hoping to cast a family who performs spoken word and/ or slams.

I'm wondering if you (a) have kids and (b) would like to be considered if so. Marriage is not a show requirement. If this doesn't sound interesting, I'm wondering if you might be willing to suggest a family for our show.

Thanks,

I am very amused. No, I didn't respond.

Wow.

I think they'd be getting more than they had bargined for with your family! :)

Man, reality TeeVee is EVERYWHERE. I had two friends from school on a show earlier this year.

Oh, but honey, don't you think it would be fun? Can't you just see them sending both of us (witchy me, atheist you, poly us) off to terrorize some unsuspecting fundy guy and teach his kids what tolerance and evolution are, while the fundy wife comes to beat her head against the brick wall of [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy's intellect and rationality? Do you think they'd accept the cats as "kids?" ; )

I'd pay to see that. :)

But as I understand it they would edit it to make everyone look like idiots no matter what actually happened.

Well, of course they would, otherwise it wouldn't sell to their target audience. We don't happen to be that target.

Wife Swap just contacted me and other Big Moves folks for the second time in the past year. They are desperate for a "plus sized family" to be on the show. Yeah, I don't think so.

Well, what's the average family size . . . 5 people? (I'm guessing, I have no idea.) So maybe the Duggars (http://www.duggarfamily.com/) qualify as a plus-size family.

Holy shit! That's twice as many as my brother and his wife have, but they've only been married half as long, so they're on track, I guess.

Heh, that's who they'd pair us up with! Lol!

Oh My! That would be something. They wouldn't have any idea what to do with a family that actually functions rationally.

What's the show about?

They take two couples and switch partners. For instance, (understanding I've never actually seen the show) they'll take a fastidious Christian woman and stick her in the house of a slobby non-religious family, and vice versa. I think they spend a week or two in the other family's house, and the show apparently makes sure to show everyone's worst side, and the most drama possible.

Hm. I'm thinking that it might be good that I haven't seen it.

it probably is good that you haven't seen it. i have seen it, and while it's interesting from a psychological point of view, it's deeply repulsive because of what the show tries to do -- it isn't about fostering greater understanding, which would be a nice chance for the so-called "reality" genre.
