It's a ten-letter word.

It's a fucking ROCKING ten-letter word.

The web version of Bookworm doesn't *accept* ten-letter words (9+, actually).

AAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!

*pat* *pat* *soothe*

I've had similar problems with Bookworm before, and also get cross with its US-centric vocabulary which won't accept some perfectly everyday Anglo words. Especially when they're 7 or 8 letter words using Difficult Letters.

IOW, I feel your pain.

And they don't accept "fuck" either and it's just a little old 4 letter word.

I'm with ya! I have it on my Palm, and sometimes I know I'm picking an excellent mega-point word, and it doesn't take. Likewise, a few other word games do that as well.

You feel cheated out of a small but important victory.

Have you tried Bookworm Adventures? I've played right through the free demo twice now; once with [livejournal.com profile] clawfoot and once with [livejournal.com profile] okoshun and [livejournal.com profile] theycallmebeth. I found it better than plain Bookworm, but also I found that it was perfectly happy to accept very long letters and letters with anti-freedom "u"s in them. I also found that it's even more fun to play word games with a bunch of hot women.

That's exactly why I play Bookworm (and other web word games) so rarely. Every once in a while I pick one up, and then I have an experience like yours, and I put it back down. Usually there's no downloadable version for my computer, either.

Thus presumably losing fun ones like fuckwit or fuckpig? Damn

It doesn't accept "Jointier" either.

"Text Twist" is the new poison of choice, by the way. Be prepared to be frustrated at its dictionary, too.

perhaps it's old fashioned and expects a gender specific noun like decoratrix vs. decorator. I bet if you used the feminine plural, "decoratrixes", that totally would've worked, heck it might have even taken the diminutive plural feminine form, "decoratrixies".

Why the bookworm doesn't accept the masculine form is it's own hangup. Ever since I tried helping pac-man overcome his oral fixation, I don't headshrink video games anymore. There was a negative reaction to one of his medications and he thought I turned blue and started biting me. Fortunately this only lasted about 20 seconds.

*laugh*

(No, it said, essentially, "Buy the paid version, and you can use words over 8 letters; isn't that great?")

The hell is "jointier"?

(And thanks.)

*chuckle* I'll have to try it.

What I want (and would pay for) is a version that lets me alter the dictionary -- I mean, I'm playing against myself; I should get to say if a word is good or not.

Just out of curiosity, seeing this reply, I downloaded and installed Bookworm Deluxe. There are three plain text files in the program directory:

bonus_word_dictionary.txt
popdefs.txt
wordlist.txt

The last one (wordlist.txt) contains one entry per line and a total of 151,477 lines. I suspect that's the dictionary the game uses. Adding words to that might well work.

It's the property of being more jointy than some other object.

Duh.

*giggle* Let me know if it works!

Unfortunately, I also grabbed Bookworm Adventures, and it doesn't look like it has a similar feature. :(

Ah. I just acquired Bookworm myself, and am annoyed at some of the words it won't accept, so I may try that too.

I have to admit though, that I've run into many more words that it does accept that I had no idea were words (unfortunately it seems they are often words that they don't show a definition for and I'm too lazy to look them up myself.)

I'm imagining, now that I think about it, that adding words *after* they've been rejected by the game may or may not work. I'll check it out after payday. :-)
