Even though I missed going to the filk con, I had a bit of geeky fun tonight. After we took about 45 minutes to roll up our characters and learn the rules, I managed to kill our whole party on my first turn! How do you like *that*? (Kobolds Ate My Baby)

Tomorrow is a trip with [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy and [livejournal.com profile] sogwife up to Santa Rosa to hang out and visit her dad. I've reserved the right to instead lie around and read books while they go. I'm wiped out.

Sunday, join me and [livejournal.com profile] stonebender and [livejournal.com profile] charliegrrrl and [livejournal.com profile] vito_excalibur and who knows who all else, at the Octavia Butler benefit.

From the [livejournal.com profile] altfriday5 :

1. Picture yourself in the most relaxing situation possible. Where are you, and what are you doing?

It is a sunny day with a cool breeze. I'm sitting in a *very* comfortable chair, reading a good book.

2. If you could change one thing about yesterday, what would it be?

I would have gone back to sleep in the morning rather than forcing myself to stay awake and thus have a day of being really tired and brain-dead.

3. Imagine that an inanimate object comes to life and starts talking to you. What is it, and what does it say?

Oh, creepy. No, thanks.

4. Suppose you could tell one person anything, without fear of negative consequences. Who would you talk to and what would you say? Why?

I would tell my sibling exactly the damage that zie is doing to people by zir behavior, and I would keep talking until zie decided to change the way zie interacts with people and the world.

5. Make a wish: what does your genie bring you to eat for lunch today?

All the vegan sushi I can eat.

The Questioner says: Don't forget your links!

Kobolds Ate My Baby

I'm curious about something. Where did the word/name Kobolds first originate? I ask because about 30 years ago, I remember reading a few novels by the same author about teenagers from 20th century USA (or maybe Canada, can't remember) getting into some alternate fantasy world. And among the many dangers they faced were these monster-beings called Kobolds. I don't remember a lot, except isolated scenes, but one thing I do remember was that the illustrations were beautiful. (These were books for older kids.) So now I'm wondering if that's where this term came from, or if that author stole it from someplace else. I read it in the 70s, so if she (I also remember that the author was a woman) did steal that name, it wasn't from anything that was written in the 80s!

Oh, creepy. No, thanks.

Don't ever watch a TV show called Wonderfalls! That's exactly what it's about.

The wonders of the Internet. I've found a book I enjoyed 30 years ago!

Kobolds are from folklore. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobold) says they're German in origin and associated with mines, which is about how I remember it.

So they're kind of like dwarves (from fantasy, not real people with dwarfism), elves, etc - ie, known fantasy creatures?

Yeah, that's what I understand. And according to [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy, different mythologies around them describe them differently.

Yes, but they don't seem to ever show up on the "good" side of things so it might be more accurate to compare them to goblins.

Right. I was just asking if they were a standard fantasy creature, like a dragon, or a dwarf, or an elf, etc. Not whether they were good or bad, or even whether they were in any way similar to the creatures I'm comparing them to. The only place I ever heard of them was in this book I read 30 years ago, so I thought they were an original creation of that author. And then recently, I've heard a couple of other refer to them, so I thought that either the book I read had created that type of evil-monster type creature, or they were a more known character type.
