Me, to [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy: "They're having [boss]'s 35th-anniversary party at Chez Panisse, where I've never been and can't afford to go. [Grandboss] came by to tell me that [boss] specifically requested that I be invited, and that she ([grandboss]) is going to pay my way. Best. Job. Ever."

Him: "wow, that place is so famous that I'VE heard of it :)"

Okay, my darling Brain Trust, especially the yarncrafty among you:

The party's in two and a half weeks, and seriously, these two are the best bosses EVAH. My boss is, fashionwise, something of a cross between Stevie Nicks and Annie Hall, so I was thinking of knitting or crocheting her some kind of foofy scarf or something lacy, but not. too. difficult. I can crochet anything if I have a pattern, but so far, I can knit but not purl, and I've never followed a knitting pattern.

Do you have any suggestions for a quick project that I might be able to complete in a week or two?

I think I might have a crochet book that has a light shawl in it. I'll take a look before I head to Cupertino tonight.

[livejournal.com profile] ozarque posted a pattern for a Magic Shawl based on the simple granny square pattern.

I'm also partial to Solomon's Knot patterns for things that work up fast and look lacy and attractive. Scarf, shawl.

Mmm, Chez Panisse.

Here's a fast project: Get two types of foofy yarn that go together. Using a large hook, crochet a narrow scarf using double or triple crochet stitch until you run out of yarn.

http://www.berroco.com/yarn_boutique.html has some fun foofy yarns.

Actually, you can go even crazier - get six or more different foofy yarns that are similar colours, and knit (garter stitch is fine) or crochet one (lengthwise) row of each in turn until you run out of yarn. Leave the ends as fringe on both ends. I should post the one I did.
