trixtah asked what we would do with millions of dollars [pounds/euros/whatever]. My answer:

I would keep my job, which is, after all, The Best Job Ever. I would pay off my mother's house. I would go about my life pretty much as I do now, but I would never have to worry if strawberries are too dear. I would buy whatever food struck our fancy, and never have to worry that if one of us lost our job, we'd be in deep shit. And when someone in my family got sick or needed dental work, we'd just go get it taken care of rather than waiting until there was enough money.

I love my life. I really wouldn't change much.

What would you do?

I would pay off the mortgage. And pay people to fix all the things in our house we're fixing really slowly. I would hire a gardener to fix that, too. I would give a certain amount to family who need it. I would get all of us private dental care, instead of just Emer (whose teeth are weak enough to merit the extra attention). I would go on holidays to nice places by train, and hire proper catsitters rather than relying on neighbours (this is one of the time-limiting factors in our holidays, there's only so long one can rely on a neighbour, even if one is paying them). I would have the kitchen redone the way I want it. I would have new curtains.

Um.

I would buy annual tickets for the train to London, the Zoo, and various other cool stuff, so that we could just go and not fret about the cost.

After that, since Rob wouldn't stop working if you begged him, we could easily live like royalty on his earnings, without ongoing fiddly maintenance and mortgage to pay for.

I wonder what Rob would do?

Pay off my house. Put away enough that I could live comfortably on the income. Probably (but not necessarily) quit my job. And then give away so much money it would make your head spin. And my head spin. And me really really happy.
