So my tom kha gai isn't as good as the restaurants', but it's good, and we ate a fair bit of it. That was just one of the lovely things about my day, including:

1) Sleeping in with [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy

2) Getting cable TV installed in time for the new fall season, including a bunch of channels we're not paying for (because we signed up for limited basic, but if they put that filter on the pole at the street, it'll mess up the girls upstairs)

3) Riding THIS thing!

4) Having the basic plot of my NaNo novel come to me in the car on the way home

5) Fresh bread in the oven

Remember when I was happy all the time? I can feel that coming on again. Man, it feels good.

There are some really great shows on cable these days....Californication...The Comeback...Weeds...Big Love. For once, I feel as though it is worth the monthly fee!

How fortunate that your NaNo novel came to you. Mine is still lurking somewhere near...but not quite IN...my brain. ugh. I'll find it. I'll find it!

I'm so glad you're feeling so happy! I can't think of a person who deserves it more. xo

Oooh, did you make the tom kha gai?

Yep, and it was so yummy, but I don't yet have the trick to making really good coconut milk from scratch, so it wasn't as coconutty as I would like (that is, I made coconut milk from scratch for this, but mine is thinner and less rich than the canned stuff, though the canned stuff has preservatives and mine obviously didn't). Still, really good. (Homemade chicken stock, chicken, garlic, onions, galangal, lemongrass, lime leaves, fish sauce, shrimp paste, enoki mushrooms, cilantro.)

Cool!! Where did you find the galangal?

Can I come over for dinner? *giggle*

You can absolutely come over for dinner (7pm every night but Saturdays), and while I bought this galangal at the Tuk Tuk Thai grocery in Berkeley, I also see it regularly at the Berkeley Bowl.

Where do you live?

I'm in Emeryville.

I've never seen it at Berkeley Bowl, but it's been awhile since I bothered to look at it, and don't think I checked there.

I was kidding about dinner, but it would be awesome to meet you and hang out! :)

Well, we have an open-door dinner policy, so you should feel free to drop by some night if you're at loose ends. :-) 2nd/4th Mondays are craft nights (except in September), and 2nd/4th Fridays, we're at [livejournal.com profile] sogwife's, on the Oakland/Emeryville border for game night.

Cool, thank you!! :)

I usually come with 2-3 other people. Two of them being small. It's a tall order for a lot of hosts!

Granted that I use canned coconut milk, but my tom kha gai is as good as the restaurant's. We should share recipes, in case there are some other factors.

I think the quality of my coconut milk was an issue -- I didn't get it creamy enough. I will probably use canned next time, but we'll see. I cobbled together several recipes, and would love yours, if you've got it handy. (Also, while I'm at it, I'm pretty free in October. Have time to get together?)
