My Christmas present was, I think you'll agree, AWESOME:

More text and photos, mostly photos )

Pretty damn good day. (Well, the coloring was a few days ago, but still. Christmas present is Christmas present.)

I forgot to mention one of the great things that happened on mom's visit. I made kneidlach soup for her, as I often do, and she had no corrections to make! Now, the significance of this may not be clear to anyone else, but mom knows that I want her to tell me when I've got something "off" in one of her recipes, because I want to get my childhood foods right. This time, she just kept telling me how good it was.

If you've met my mom, you know she's not shy about offering criticism. I think I may have made the perfect kneidlach soup. Too bad I didn't measure when I made the kneidlachs, but I think I have the texture down perfectly by sight, so we'll see how that goes next time.

I did most of the cooking while she was here, and she appeared to love it all. That makes me happy. She ate a LOT. She even put on a couple of pounds (which of course prompted her to give up bread on the last day here and go all Atkins on me, but hey, after that, I made her a mushroom omelet that she couldn't stop raving about, so all is well and I really really am not going to try to talk my mother out of her crazy food stuff. It's pretty much engrained by age 69, I'd say).

Mom got here last evening a little before dinner time. We had soup and visited while I gave a fashion show of a bunch of really adorable clothes she brought for me. Then today, we visited and went shopping together. She bought us LOTS of food and snacks, to add to the massive amounts of food and snacks she brought with her.

She thinks she's probably dying. I'm afraid she might be right. She's sure her painful gut means more cancer; she'll go see early next month when she sees her doctor. Even if it's not cancer, she appears to be winding down.

And there's no segue that will make this sound not-sad, but it isn't meant to be: If you'd like to meet my mother and eat lots of meat-heavy dinner, please feel free to join us tomorrow night (Friday) or Saturday night. Dinner's at 7, and she'd be happy to meet any of my friends who want to come by. We brought out the big table, so there's plenty of room. Tomorrow is prime rib; Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy will be making pork ribs.

1) It was Mom Food Night: Lovely lasagna dinner (well, lasagna, salad with roasted tomatoes and balsamic vinegar, fresh sourdough bread, roasted elephant garlic, steamed broccoli, and homemade ice cream -- thanks for the excellent machine, [livejournal.com profile] klwalton!) with [livejournal.com profile] tracytreefrog, [livejournal.com profile] berkeleyfarm, [livejournal.com profile] sogwife, and [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy. (Charlotte, you left your wine. If you'll drink it or cook with it, I can take it by your place.) And I managed to get everyone to take a hunk of lasagna home, so there's not quite as much lurking in the fridge as there might be otherwise. That was some good shit, but then a recipe that starts out with 4 pounds of meat and 4 pounds of cheese kinda has something going for it from the get-go, huh?

2) Caught up with an old friend ([livejournal.com profile] misanthropoid, do you remember Jake from the old listserv?) and that was just lovely. We always manage to pick up where we left off, and there's a lot of love there.

3) Gonna do some experimenting with my diet, starting tomorrow. If I decide to write about it here (may or may not), I'll likely create an opt-in filter.

4) My kitchen looks like something exploded in there. It may take me a full day to get it clean again. It was totally worth it.

5) Once again, I am faced with a bunch of plans for the weekend, and a possibility that I'll blow off some or all of them. Such is life.

Hope everyone out there in LJ Land is doing well. I'll try to catch up with your doings tomorrow. Today was all about the lasagna. :-)

Soon, I will be sending out email invitations to local folks (local in this case is the San Francisco Bay Area) to help me with the Mom Food Project. "Help" will, in this case, mean choosing an item off the Mom Food list that I haven't made yet, and choosing a night to come to my house and have dinner with us. I will cook the Mom Food, you will eat it if it looks appetizing to you.

[EDIT: Note to [livejournal.com profile] stonebender and anyone else who has access issues with getting into my apartment (down a few steps): I will come to you if you don't mind me cooking in your kitchen.]

How is this helping, you ask? It's helping because my mom's food is very rich and fat-tastic, and we need help eating it so we don't maim ourselves in the process of completing this Project. :-)

(You're not being asked to critique the food or anything; I'm the only one likely to know if it tastes like my mom's. :-)

Anyway, I'm going to start sending these invitations out one at a time and making dates to have folks over. If you're local (or planning a visit) and want to come help, please comment here or send me an email. Thanks!
