Garden, yay!

Well, I've been doing the garden in short bursts to keep from burning out, and I finally have the whole square-foot plot planted. I'll take pictures soon, but here's what I have planted:

rainbow chard?	violet queen cauliflower	lettuce	rainbow bush beans
rainbow chard?	violet queen cauliflower	violet queen cauliflower	rainbow bush beans
red carrots	red carrots	momotaro tomatoes	fino verde basil
yellow onions	strawberries	beets	beets

I only planted one tomato plant this year. I know tomatoes won't do all that well in my plot because of all the shade, but I can't seem to let go of the need to have fresh tomatoes. Maybe I'll plant some more in containers in stonebender's back yard (with his permission, of course) and see if they can handle only being tended once a week.

The "rainbow chard?" is because I planted some seeds that had spilled in my seed box, and I *think* they're chard, but I don't know for sure.

Oh, and since the last time I was there, there are suddenly leaves on the apple tree!

Please keep posting about your garden. I'm feeling the stirrings of motivation for planting a wee one of my own. As I lay in the sun Friday, learning my songs, I noticed the weeds growing in the small raised bed in my front yard, so I weeded. It felt so good to be outside with my hands in the dirt and on growing things. I felt like a bit of a murderer though, weeds are living things too!

Burnout is a huge risk for me right now, so it's very good to hear you talking about taking it in small bits. Sounds like you have a lovely, tasty garden.

Yay for gardening and for doing it at a pace that works for you.

If you want, i will share broccoli rabe with you when it is ready. Like broccoli but grows faster and is already naturally peppery flavored.

If they were funny brown knobbly seeds that look like small dried peas but with more corners, then they probably *are* chard. I need to plant some up myself, chard is great stuff. :)

The trouble is that the beet seeds look similar to me. :-)

(Don't tell anyone, but I hate chard. I'm hoping to grow some for loracs, who loves it.)

Last summer I enjoyed mixed to moderately successful results with inverted, hanging tomatoes. Think of the method as a plant protruding from a hole in the center of a bucket. (My planter is square and supports one plant from each quarter.) I also planted herbs and flowers in the exposed soil on top. This year I'll expand the herbs and forget the flowers.
