Told UCB I'm not available tomorrow or Friday. Gonna spend time with my
sweet man in beautiful downtown San Leandro. The boss was disappointed,
but she knows that she only has me when I'm available, or when she knows
ahead of time when I'll be here. (She doesn't know yet whether she's
gonna need coverage for the rest of this week.) It's a shame she doesn't
get more notice about when she'll need me, but most of the time, I'm able
to come, so I don't feel bad about taking some time to do family stuff.

The toffee is already a hit.

I need to make some signs and organize a supply cabinet. Other than that,
I'm pretty idle today, so don't hate me if I'm really posty today.

(No more toffee for me. I have spoken.)

Here's the task:

1. If you have a Netflix queue or something similar, list the top five on
your queue.
2. Say something about each movie -- why you selected it, what you've
heard about it, what you thought of it if you have already seen it.
3. If you don't have a Netflix queue, you can use mine -- just click
here

1. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes -- [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy and I like --
no, totally GROOVE on -- cheesy movies, and I've never seen this one. I
think he has, but he put this on the queue, and I'm eager to see it.

2. Sleeping Beauty: Special Edition -- this was my favorite movie in
childhood, and it had my very favorite villain of all time. I still get a
chill when I see this
image
, and I am all atwitter. I'm guessing my partners won't want any
part of this one, but I loved it so much.

3. Amazon Women on the Moon -- see #1

4. Flashback -- I put this on the queue to show to [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy,
because I think every aging hippy should see it. :-) Plus, Carol Kane is
a must-see.

5. Waiting for Guffman -- I am on a mission to see all of Christopher Guest's movies.
I loved Best In Show and A Mighty Wind. Looking forward to it.

A few weeks ago, I pulled my shoulder while loading some cups and saucers
onto a shelf at work. I told my boss, but it wasn't a huge deal, so I
just decided to let it get better. It hasn't. I have to find out tonight
what I need to to in order to see a doctor about it. Wish I had filled
out an incident report that day. (I still can't lift my arm over my head,
and certain movements (especially when holding something that weighs more
than a few ounces) hurt a lot. (And I can't sleep right, because I sleep
on my right side, and it smooshes my right shoulder to do that.)) Ooh,
parenthesis madness!

Anyway, I noticed that some of my friends are ouchy and/or grouchy today,
and I wanted to grump for a minute in solidarity. :-)

I don't have a Bay Area filter, but this is a Bay Area question:

[livejournal.com profile] dryadgrl are planning our birthday bash (September 17th -- save
the date!), and we want to have a kid-friendly gathering in or near
Oakland, near a BART station, where we can have food and drinks. We are
thinking about renting the Temescal pool or going to the park across the
street from my house (which is small but nice) -- any other ideas? Do you
have a favorite place to have picnic/barbecue-type gatherings? Or is there an indoor, kid-friendly place you can think of? We don't mind spending some money on the venue.

P.S. If your own place fits the criteria -- close to public transportation, kid-friendly -- and you feel like letting us invade for an afternoon, I would do all the cooking and cleaning.

Recently, I heard someone at work express the opinion that people who
don't do what zie does -- actively work for social justice with
progressive organizations -- shouldn't complain about the country,
shouldn't be taken seriously, and aren't making the world a better place.

I say bullshit.

You make the world better when you work for social justice in organized
venues, true. But you also make the world better when you:

vote.

treat people with respect.

get to know your neighbors.

write to your congresscritters.

transgress wrongheaded laws and traditions.

blog about peace and social justice.

Now, I'm NOT saying you're a bad person if there's stuff on this list that
you don't do. And I'm NOT saying that you don't make the world better in
a thousand other ways. Just saying that people don't have to make the
world better in the way you do to count.

Do you have other things to add to the list? I'd love to hear your ideas
of ways that you and others make the world better.
