i like it, but it makes me think of my grandfather in the last years of his life where he never called anyone by name and he'd forgotten how to use the telephone.
Interesting (and of course sad) that that brought that up for you (I can say "that" a few more times if you like.) I saw the mother as having a lot more lucidity and agency than that, but I'm not sure if I just read it into her deciding to only eat chocolate. I'll have to read it again a few times.

my grandfather knew that these things were going on, and he worked around them strenuously; i am not sure i'd have noticed either one had they not been pointed out to me by my dad. so, i do read it with some amount of agency there. must think about lucidity, though.
