I need a pop-culture icon.

Belly full of tuna casserole and spinach: Check.
Cable TV installed, and cable run to the living-room TV: Check.
Phone set up for calling [livejournal.com profile] stonebender on the commercials: Check.

As I just said to [livejournal.com profile] autographedcat, the new fall season is a huge bonding ritual for me and [livejournal.com profile] stonebender. 33 minutes until it begins, Yay!

Before I met you, I didn't even know what a "final girl" was. Now I'm pretending to be all smart in my movie blog by tossing in references to film theory. Thanks for the bit of education.

Congrats to [livejournal.com profile] bafleyanne for winning the lyrics-guessing contest! [livejournal.com profile] bafleyanne, if you'll send me your snailmail address, I will send you a suitably tacky prize package.

The answers are behind the cut )

The 5,000-question survey asked "What is your favorite song lyric?"

I don't have one favorite, but below are 20 of my faves. Can you guess the artist and song for each one without looking it up? Comments are screened until they're all guessed, and I'll mark the guessed ones until they're all guessed, too. The person who gets the most gets a tacky prize from me. Some should be very very easy, and few will be obscure at all to most of my friendslist, I'm guessing.

Edits: Still need 6, 10, 11, 16, 18, 20. (Some folks have guessed parts of these, but no one's gotten song/artist combined.)

Guessed so far: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19; also, yes, being anonymous is fine.

From [livejournal.com profile] black_pearl_10:

So I think black artists especially in hip-hop and rap, get unfairly targeted with the need for "social responsibility" tag. So I'd like y'all to put down your favorite (non hip-hop and non-rap) song(s) about killing and/or objectification of women written and performed by a white person or group.

Copy this post, add your own entry (or entries) to this list, and post in your own journal. My guess is we'll have a huge list by the end of the day.

Other people's entries )

My additions; only a few for now, but I'll try to post more later )

I always wanted a jukebox, growing up. It's perfect for my way of listening to things -- I want lots of songs that I like, but not always by the same artists. I hate commercials, and I don't really want to be switching 45s all day to get a mix.

Oh my gosh, do I love my new computer (my first new computer ever). I have ALL my CDs on the media player, with 100 gigs to spare, and I now have the long-awaited jukebox. I feel like the last kid on the block to have shufflable music, but here I am, all happy and shit.

Short version: Hard as life can be sometimes, it's full of little joys, and big ones, too.

Long version: )

Vegan pizza party Friday night, 7pm, my place. Walking trip (you're welcome to drive and meet us) to the Ashby Flea Market and the Temescal Farmer's Market Sunday. Y'all are welcome to either or both. Send me email if you want more details about time and stuff for Sunday.

Via [livejournal.com profile] firecat and [livejournal.com profile] surelars, below is a list of all the films nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award since 1970 (with the winning picture at the top of the list for each year). Bold the ones you've seen.

Just saw Pan's Labyrinth with [livejournal.com profile] stonebender.

no real spoilers, but there may be some in comments )

Serene-bob gives it two (severed?) thumbs up.

Just for fun, I'm gonna list my Pandora songs for the night. It's on a kind of a hippy groove tonight, which isn't my usual favorite music, but it's working fine for me at the moment.

"Witchy Woman", Eagles (marked it "like it")
"He's A Good Face, But He's Down And Out", Dean Ford & The Gaylords (listened, but didn't mark "like" or "don't like")
"Afternoon Tea", the Kinks (listened)
"Only You Know and I Know", Dave Mason (listened)
"You Can Make Me Free", Billy Joel (wow, one of his I hadn't heard or don't remember. weird. listened, didn't mark -- kinda Queen-ish)
"Out Here On My Own", Irene Cara (marked "like it" -- it was a favorite when I was young, and it's total nostalgia)
"Theme", Shooting Star (listened)
"How", John Lennon (marked "like it")
"Cross Over To Me", Catie Curtis (the first one tonight that was already marked "like it")
"New Beginning", Tracy Chapman (already marked "like it")

And now I need to concentrate on some work stuff, so I'm turning it off.

Tonight, for the first time:

1) I'm going to an Oscar party that's not at my home or the home of one of my family members (We're going to to the Cerrito with a friend.)
2) I haven't seen ONE of the nominated films (getting sick between nomination time and award time will do that to you)
3) I (well, [livejournal.com profile] stonebender) will pay to see a broadcast TV show on the big screen

Have fun, those of yinz who care about Oscar Night. We will!

(I maybe should've rethought the whole wearing-lipstick thing. I forgot how yucky the stuff tastes.)

Here are the rules:
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better. If I already know you well, expect the questions may be a little more intimate!
3. You will update your lj with the answers to the questions [or just answer in comments].
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in a post on your LJ [if you want to].
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

[Note from Serene: The normal disclaimer applies -- skip whatever you want to skip, do or do not do, as pleases you, make up new rules if you want. Whatever. Also, I'm only promising to interview the first five people who ask me, but I'll try to get to everyone.]

So my latest Bzz campaign thingy (*waves at [livejournal.com profile] misanthropoid*) is the new Jim Carrey movie, "The Number 23".

Oh, man, based on the trailer, I would probably want to chew my arm off to get out of the theater. When I finally rolled my eyes nearly out of my head, it was in a purely geeky fit of pique:

Stupid professor character: "And 2 divided by 3 is point-six-six-six, the number of the devil."

Um, no it's NOT. Not unless Dubya really gets to declare that pi equals 3.

Go away. Really.

I have been SO freaking busy with my fun new job (I'm working part-time for my brother-out-law's company, in addition to all the contract work I was already doing) that I've been essentially absent from here. I'm taking a quick break, though, to post a few little notes:

1) [livejournal.com profile] sogwife rocks. Not only is she Snow Fucking White (a *chicken* followed her home yesterday), but she rescued all my plants from my horrid neglect the other day. She trimmed them, watered them, cleaned them, and set them back in their windowsills. She even did the outside ones. Now to see if I can start treating them better. My house has basically gone to shit the past week while I've been riding my new learning curve (which also involves some NP(roject)E), but today I am trying to whip it back into shape.

2) I like "Heroes" more and more, and "Studio 60" less and less.

3) I forgot to post the funniest line at last week's slam. The guy who won actually had a line in one of his poems about Blackbeard coming back from the dead. The phrase he used that just dissolves me and [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy into giggles, though, was the unfortunate "disembodied corpse". WTF?

4) Worst slogan ever, on the wall of one of our favorite Thai places, Tuk Tuk Thai (a tuk tuk is one of these): "Tuk Tuk Thai: Let us drive you to a good Thai cafe"

Last night, after the movie, I assumed the reason I was feeling kinda crappy was the junk I'd eaten all day. This morning, I figgered the same thing. Got to work at 8, and by 9:30, I was pretty sure I wasn't gonna make it. [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy sweetly hauled his butt out of bed and picked me up from work. I slept for the next four or five hours, and have been sleeping on and off all day. Not sure what the deal is, but I'm really tired, my heart is doing its weird thing (nothing dangerous; it skips beats sometimes), and I have this odd, new symptom: I get twinges of pain/weakness in my right shin. What. Ever. I'm ready to feel like myself again, thanks.

In better news, made yummy wheat-and-oat bread tonight, and I'll try something else for the party tomorrow if I'm up for it. Really truly hope I'm up for it.

Oh, and watched Grey's Anatomy for the first time. Not bad. Soap-opera-ish, but that's not always a death sentence for me. I'll give it a couple more episodes.

(SO so so tired of the rude-antisocial-bastard-is-SO-sexy trope, by the way. It's why I don't watch "House," and may be why I stop watching Grey's.)

Nice evening last night. Movie with [livejournal.com profile] sogwife, [livejournal.com profile] wild_irises, [livejournal.com profile] alanbostick, [livejournal.com profile] pantryslut, [livejournal.com profile] imnotandrei, and [livejournal.com profile] black_pearl_10. ("This Film Is Not Yet Rated", which I may talk about in another post -- if I had to pick one word to describe it, I would probably choose "Underambitious".)

And I bought a twelve-dollar dress and a five-dollar DVD, and consumed mass quantities of fried foods and milkshakes (one mango, one green tea). The food made me feel like crap physically, and I still do, but it was fun, overall. [livejournal.com profile] sogwife and I don't get to the movies often enough.

Tonight: This Film Is Not Yet Rated at the Shattuck Cinema in Berkeley. 7:25 showing, meet up at 7 if you wanna come. (Meet up with me and [livejournal.com profile] sogwife at 5:15 at Tully's if you wanna go get dinner first -- we haven't yet decided where to eat, but we both work within blocks of the theater, so we decided not to go home before the show.)

Tomorrow: Laundry

Saturday: A friend's party in the city -- I never go to the city, so that tells you how much I adore this friend.

Sunday: Date with [livejournal.com profile] stonebender. We will not be attending Folsom.

Next Thursday, 9/28: Dinner at my place with [livejournal.com profile] dryadgrl (and, I assume, her family)

Saturday, 9/30: [livejournal.com profile] rmjwell/RA's party

Sunday, 10/1: Family dinner at [livejournal.com profile] stonebender's place for my b'day

Busier than usual, but still only one thing a day, right? :-)

1. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes -- [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy and I like --
no, totally GROOVE on -- cheesy movies, and I've never seen this one. I
think he has, but he put this on the queue, and I'm eager to see it.

2. Sleeping Beauty: Special Edition -- this was my favorite movie in
childhood, and it had my very favorite villain of all time. I still get a
chill when I see this
image
, and I am all atwitter. I'm guessing my partners won't want any
part of this one, but I loved it so much.

3. Amazon Women on the Moon -- see #1

4. Flashback -- I put this on the queue to show to [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy,
because I think every aging hippy should see it. :-) Plus, Carol Kane is
a must-see.

5. Waiting for Guffman -- I am on a mission to see all of Christopher Guest's movies.
I loved Best In Show and A Mighty Wind. Looking forward to it.

(No more toffee for me. I have spoken.)

Here's the task:

1. If you have a Netflix queue or something similar, list the top five on
your queue.
2. Say something about each movie -- why you selected it, what you've
heard about it, what you thought of it if you have already seen it.
3. If you don't have a Netflix queue, you can use mine -- just click
here
